Electrical Test & Tag Services with Med Tech

A safe workplace starts with reliable electrical equipment. Med Tech provides professional electrical safety testing and tagging services to help New Zealand businesses stay compliant, reduce risk, and avoid costly downtime. Our technicians travel to your site at a time that suits you, so testing fits around your operations rather than the other way around.

What Is Electrical Test & Tag?

Electrical test and tagging is the inspection and testing of electrical equipment at intervals set out in the AS/NZS 3760 Standard (AS/NZS 3012 applies for construction and demolition sites). Med Tech technicians use calibrated portable appliance testers to check each item, then attach a pass or fail tag showing the result and the next due date. Every test is backed by a detailed report covering the specific checks carried out on each appliance, and we offer reminders so your next testing date is never missed.

Why Test & Tag Matters

Under New Zealand health and safety law, businesses have a duty to keep their workplace safe as far as reasonably practicable, and electrical safety is a core part of that obligation. Equipment that was safe a year ago isn't guaranteed to be safe today; cords fray, insulation degrades, and faults can develop without any visible warning. Regular testing catches these issues before they become hazards.

What Equipment Needs Testing?

Any equipment connected to the power supply by a flexible cord or plug falls within scope, including equipment that is:

  • New or being used for the first time
  • Already in regular use
  • Recently repaired or serviced
  • Returning to service after a second-hand sale
  • Available for hire

This also extends to certain Residual Current Devices (RCDs). Testing needs vary by industry, so if you're unsure what applies to your business, get in touch and we'll talk you through it.

How Often Does Equipment Need Testing?

Testing frequency depends on the environment and equipment type. Typical intervals under AS/NZS 3760 include:

  • Construction and demolition sites: every 3 months
  • Factories, workshops, and manufacturing/assembly areas: every 6 months
  • Environments where cords are flexed often, exposed to abuse, or in hostile conditions: every 12 months
  • Low-risk environments with minimal flexing or exposure: every 5 years
  • Residential-type premises (hotels, motels, hostels, boarding houses): every 2 years
  • Equipment used for commercial cleaning: every 6 months
  • Hire equipment: inspected prior to each hire, tested every 3 months
  • Repaired, serviced, or reintroduced equipment: tested after service or before returning to use

These intervals are maximums — higher-risk environments may need more frequent checks. Talk to our team if you're not sure what applies to you.
